Apocalyptic Change by Invasive Species

As part of our research here at CAPOCS, we look at all possible causes for apocalyptic events in order to create better models for both prevention and preparedness. We take an all-hazards approach, and our general consensus is that it will not be one single event that causes life as we know it to change. Instead, it will be a confluence of many things at one time.

One of the factors we believe will contribute to that change is the introduction of invasive species where they do not belong. Many of them are not problematic in their natural habitat for many reasons, such as predators and climate. When introduced to another area they sometimes take over and destroy the normal inhabitants through predation, overcrowding, or consumption of available food resources.

The National Environmental Education Foundation recently launched a program called the Asian Carp Exploration Curriculum to enlist high school students in combating this problem in the Great Lakes. I appreciate ideas like this for several reasons. It encourages group-think. It assists high school students with practical hands-on instruction. It enlists the next generation in creating solutions.

It brings hope.

Check out the program HERE. Maybe you can get your kids or their school involved.
