People often assume I wrote The Midwife and the Medic because I wanted to tell a disaster story.
I didn’t.
I wrote it because I wanted to tell a story about ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things when the world around them is falling apart.
For more than thirty years, I’ve worked in professions where preparation wasn’t optional. I’ve served in the Marine Corps, the Army as a combat medic, worked as a paramedic, helped stand up the Department of Homeland Security after 9/11, and spent much of my adult life teaching people how to prepare for emergencies.
Over those years, I learned something that Hollywood rarely gets right.
Disasters aren’t defined by explosions or chaos.
They’re defined by people.
The neighbor who checks on the elderly couple next door.
The volunteer who works until exhaustion because someone still needs help.
The medic who keeps going.
The mother who refuses to give up on her family.
The quiet heroes whose names never make the news.
When Hurricane Helene struck the mountains of western North Carolina, those lessons came rushing back. I watched communities cut off from the outside world, but I also watched ordinary people become extraordinary for one another. Neighbors shared food. Churches opened their doors. Volunteers arrived with chainsaws before government agencies could reach many areas. Hope spread because people chose to act.
That’s the story I wanted to tell.
Yes, The Midwife and the Medic is a novel.
It has danger, suspense, romance, and mystery.
But beneath all of that is a question I hope every reader asks themselves:
Who will I be when my community needs me?
Will I wait for someone else?
Or will I be prepared to serve?
If readers finish this book entertained, I’ll be grateful.
If they finish it believing that one ordinary person really can make a difference, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
Because at its heart, The Midwife and the Medic isn’t a story about surviving disaster.
It’s a story about becoming the kind of person others are thankful to find when disaster arrives.
