Your home should be…
- A sanctuary
- A place where your family is safe
- A place where they don’t have to worry about the darkness outside
But is it?
Dads, you need to make sure your home is all that for your wife and kids.
No wife and kids? That just means it’s easier than ever to set foundations now for when there is a family.
I offer a service as part of Prepared that’s called The Family Fortress.
Basically, it’s my hands-on service to families where I customize plans for safety, preps, security, and everything else tailored to your home, habits, work, school, church, and more.

I just finished a Family Fortress report and meeting with a family a few days ago, so let me tell you in a little more detail what that entailed.
I visited their home several times, even spending several nights there.
I got to know the entire family, even the pets.
We talked about their state of preparedness and their goals.
In other words, how prepared are they for life’s emergencies, how prepared do they want to be, and how far down the rabbit hole of prepping did they want to go.
In the end, after lots of conversations, we had a final meeting over Zoom where I explained the 50 page report of recommendations I customized just for them.
Now they’re well on their way to creating a Family Fortress, and I’m sure we’ll meet again to talk about updates or upgrades to their plans.
Specific items clients have asked for in Family Fortress consulting in the past:
- Go to school with their kids and analyze the school’s emergency procedures
- Simulating a break-in at the home to practice what to do
- Attend church with the family and look over the church’s security procedures
- Go shopping and teach onsite situational awareness for emergencies in public or crowded places
- Teach and certify the entire family in first aid and CPR
- Visit a gun range to practice weapon safety
- Teach self-defense
- And so much more!
Subjects we almost always cover include-
- What disasters and events are most likely to happen?
- Shelter in place or evacuate?
- Food and water
- Fire safety
- Pets
- Weapons in the home
- Home security systems
- And other items specific to the family and the home
If you’re interested in Family Fortress consulting, I work with families in different ways depending on budget and desire.
Best Case Scenario is me travelling to your location and spending a week with your family in person. In a week, I can cover all facets of your life, and leave you with a Family Fortress in place.
The Really Good Scenario is a series of Zoom and video calls where I digitally tour your home, speak to all members of the family, and create a customized report.
The DIY Scenario is me sending you a general report of recommendations and ideas, and you take it from there.
I’m more than happy to do any of these. My goal is that I help you and your family to be as safe as you can be for both Everyday Emergencies and disaster events.
Some families start with the DIY Scenario and quickly get overwhelmed and ask me to upgrade and work with them more.
To spread out costs, I can even customize my consulting to include working with several families at a time in the same town or even working with an entire church or business at a time.
In my time with a Homeland Security disaster team, I would sometimes work with entire communities at a time.

Real Life Case Study: Examining ONLY one aspect of your home’s safety!
This is something I do in all Family Fortress reports.
Do you know of the dangers around you that could affect your home and your family?
This is a snapshot map of Charlotte NC.
Just a cursory examination revealed the following:
- Interstates, railroad tracks, and factories that could have accidents resulting in massive chemical spills, explosions, or contamination
- Floodprone areas near rivers and low-lying land
- Flight paths of major airlines
- A large population base that has rioted within the past 10 years
There’s so much more than I would look for to prepare a family in this area for Everyday Emergencies and disasters.

This is my core philosophy on preparedness.
Get prepared NOW as best you can with what you have. It’s better than nothing.
Stay simple. Don’t complicate things.
Upgrade and level up as time, money, resources, or training are available. Never stop improving.
Train and practice often. Always think of yourself as an amateur.
Don’t get complacent. Anything can happen anywhere.
