Today’s lesson…Level up your home fire protection
I’ll be honest with you about something that hit my home. Last month we had an electrical surge in the basement that cooked my washer, dryer, and desktop computer. That’s three big-ticket items, gone in a flash.
Living in an old farmhouse means I’ve gotten used to creaks in the floorboards and drafty windows. But the electrical? That’s a different beast. Hidden wires, old circuits, and who-knows-what behind the walls. An electrician came out, shook his head at the setup, and told me about something I’d never heard of before. It’s called Ting.
It’s a tiny smart device you plug into any outlet. Doesn’t look like much. But behind the scenes it listens for electrical “signatures” that signal trouble- things like arcing wires, faulty breakers, or hidden fire hazards. If it finds something, you get an alert before it turns into smoke or flames.
Here’s what I love about it:
- Fire prevention. Ting spots issues before they spark. Literally.
- Surge defense. It keeps watch for the kind of surge that just fried my appliances.
- 24/7 monitoring. Once it’s plugged in, I don’t have to think about it. It just keeps guard.
- Free (sometimes). My insurance company didn’t cover it, but some do. This makes it a no-brainer.
Now, I don’t just use Ting. I recommend it. In an old house like mine (or any house, honestly), it’s like having a silent electrician living in the wall.
*Of course, I mean that in the most not creepy way possible. Parts of my farm are reputed to be haunted, but a guy living in my walls would be too much.

This pic is our plugged into the living room wall. If there’s a surge, the technician will call and sometimes have you move it to other outlets to pinpoint the trouble area.

- Fire ladder for upper floors
